INSPIRED BY THE HUES OF EARTH + FOREST
This post is part of my Home Styling Works Autumn Color Palette Series. In the previous post, I shared several color palettes to style your home for fall.
In this post, I’m sharing a beautiful tabletop for Thanksgiving (or any autumn dinner party) inspired by the colors found in the Earth + Forest.
EARTH + FOREST COLOR INSPIRATIONS
This natural palette features warm shades of umber, rich layers of sepia, and muted shades of chestnut brown, earthy gray and warm flax.
And a natural color palette wouldn’t be complete without the verdant green hues found in the forest, with lush canopies of trees, moss-covered stones and various shades of ferns and evergreens.
Everything in the tabletop below is inspired by this rich color palette provided by nature.
TABLETOP LAYERING
You can re-create this tabletop by building layers of texture and color.
The first layer is a tablecloth in warm neutral hues of dark brown and beige. I’ve included options below (with product links below the image to shop). These tablecloths are all in the autumnal chestnut hues, and feature a rustic striped design, a beautiful pattern and an elegant leaf motif. Any of these three would work as a base for the tabletop.
PLACE SETTINGS
After the tablecloth, layer each place setting starting with a natural woven round placement, followed by classic creamware plates with a beaded trim detail (these are an entertaining staple in my house, as they go with everything). Another way to tie in the “Earth + Forest” palette/theme is with these fabulous wood acorn napkin rings shown below.
In the shopping gallery above, I added a couple of options for dinner plates and salad plates. I love how the faux bois wood grain salad/dessert plate looks with both the white beaded dinner plates and – for a really elegant look – the Kit Kemp “Tall Trees” for Spode dinner plates. I love the oval serving platter in the “Tall Trees” pattern, too (this also makes a lovely hostess gift).

A NATURAL CENTERPIECE IDEA
As an alternative to flowers, I created an easy centerpiece featuring live autumn ferns, which are easy to find in the fall at your local nursery or big box store. They’re also available online here. Autumn ferns are perennial plants, which means they come back every year. So, when you’re finished using them in the centerpiece, just re-plant them outdoors in a shady part of your garden.
To create this centerpiece, you can use a large wooden bowl or an aged copper planter. I chose a mango wood bowl that I lined with a few layers of plastic bubble wrap to protect the wood. Starting in the center, I carefully placed the ferns inside the bowl and added potting soil to keep them in place. Next, I added reindeer moss to hide the dirt and add another textural element to the centerpiece. To finish the arrangement, I foraged a few small branches from my backyard and inserted them into the soil.
An easy Thanksgiving centerpiece in under 15 minutes!

THE FINISHING TOUCHES
Paying attention to the details makes a tabletop truly special. I call these “The Finishing Touches”. These are found in the ambience of candlelight with votive holders made of rustic birch bark and elegant tortoise shell, a few artfully placed green acorn squashes and acorns on a rustic olive wood board, and a few clippings of foraged oak branches placed around the center of the table.
