Where I’m sharing 20 years of styling secrets
from the design magazine world
I’m sure many people can relate to this story.
Getting a little stuck in a rut (and maybe even a little restless), career-wise.
I spent 20 years as a Field Editor & Story Producer for national design & gardening magazines (such as Better Homes and Gardens, Traditional Home, Country Home and many others). But…. twenty years is a long time to do something – even something that you love. In fact, it was my “dream job” for many years. You can read more about my background here.
First, I had a few big life changes over the past few years. In 2014, I moved from the long winters of upstate New York to Dallas, Texas (a more temperate climate). It was there that I met my future husband, and in April 2018, we were married.
It was also around that time that I was becoming creatively restless. My career started out 20 years ago when I was creating original story ideas for magazines. I would propose a concept, design the sets, and produce the original content we would then shoot in my home/studio in upstate New York.
After I moved to Dallas, my career (and the print media industry) took a different direction. I was now primarily a location scout for the magazines, working with interior designers to produce their editorial photo shoots. While I enjoyed meeting and collaborating with many talented designers, it wasn’t nearly as creatively satisfying as coming up with my own original ideas. Plus, the opportunities in the magazine industry were shifting and shrinking.
In short, I needed to transition my skill set to the online world, where I could create my own content and share my many years of knowledge with an audience I could cultivate.
So I began formulating my idea for a PLAN ‘B’.
In 2019, after relocating to Nevada to be closer to my husband’s grown children, my nascent idea began to take shape. I realized that the content world had become primarily online-focused (even before the pandemic), so I came up with an idea on how to combine my years of creating content with every person’s desire to create a warm, inviting and curated home environment.
My new venture, called Home Styling Works®, is dedicated to showing you simple and creative ideas on how to create everyday beauty in your life – from an elegantly-styled bookshelf or a lovely table setting, to whipping up a delicious home-cooked meal or creating a beautiful little garden paradise.
It’s all about creating beauty in the little things that add up to a beautifully (and realistically) styled life at home.
At the end of the day, my aim is to help you Make Your Every Day More Beautiful®.
